What is Form 1099?

Form 1099 is a form that small businesses use to report miscellaneous income paid to others during the year. Form 1099 should be used for recording payments to independent workers, not payments to employees. So anyone you hired to do a job during the year, who is not an employee, may need to receive a Form 1099 from you. Some examples of independent workers are: graphic designers, web developers, cleaning services, freelance writers, landscapers or any other self-employed provider.

Who should receive a Form 1099?

Business are required to file a Form 1099 to any independent worker that you paid a total of $600 or more during the course of the year.

Is there a deadline for filing Form 1099?

The deadline to mail Form 1099 to recipients is January 31, 2017. In order to have the form(s) prepared by the deadline, we will need to receive the *necessary information from you no later than January 23, 2017.
